We checked the film judge before fixing the films
Off-subject drawings looked like our biggest problem. Before fixing them we checked the judge that counts them. It agreed with a person on half of the frames. Now it agrees on 93%.

Two frames, two verdicts. The first one the judge got wrong. The second it got right.
The problem
A film is graded by a vision model, frame by frame. Off-subject was the biggest failure left, and the last fix did not move it. So we asked a different question. Is the judge right?
What we did
We took 60 saved frames and labelled each one ourselves, by a written rule. Does the frame show the thing the ask names, so a visitor with no caption would know it? Then we compared.
The old judge agreed on 30 of 60. That is 50%. Asked about the same frame twice, it changed its answer 16 times out of 60.
It called charts, globes and a window with rain off-subject when they were fine. It let through a heart for a quiet Sunday and an oval for a chicken.
What changed
The new judge answers one question first. What is drawn: the real thing, a stand-in that tries to be it, or nothing? Craft comes after.
On the 60 frames it agrees 56 times, 93%. Same frame twice: 97% the same. On 20 frames we labelled before seeing any verdict, it agrees 17 times, 85%.
The numbers
- Same 50 films, 277 frames, old judge then new.
- Frames passing: 42.6%, then 52.3%.
- Off-subject: 29, then 36. The old judge missed seven of them.
- Plain: 38, then 36.
- Cramped: 33, then 19. Clipped: 23, then 10. Both were catch-alls.
Off-subject is not the top class. Nothing moving is, at 43. So no film fix this round. The next ones are measured with this judge.
